چکیده

The purpose of this work is to develop an anatomically and mechanically representative breast phantom for the validation of breast conserving surgical therapies, specifically, in this case, image guided surgeries. Using three patients scheduled for lumpectomy and four healthy volunteers in mock surgical presentations, the magnitude, direction, and location of breast deformations was analyzed. A phantom setup was then designed to approximate such deformations in a mock surgical environment. Specifically, commercially available and custom-built polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) phantoms were used to mimic breast tissue during surgery. A custom designed deformation apparatus was then created to reproduce deformations seen in typical clinical setups of the preand intra-operative breast geometry. Quantitative analysis of the human subjects yielded a positive correlation between breast volume and amount of breast deformation. Phantom results reflected similar behavior with the custom-built PVA phantom outperforming the commercial phantom.

Ultrasound-guided boost irradiation of tumor cavity after lumpectomy in breast cancer

Background:  After breast conserving surgery, most recurrences occur around the primary tumor site. This justifies the use of boost radiotherapy to the primary site of tumor. Surgical scar is not always a good surrogate for the location of the lumpectomy cavity. The aim of this study was to evaluate ultrasonic guidance for detection of the lumpectomy cavity after breast conserving surgery ...

Skin Reaction in Radiation Therapy for Breast Cancer

Introduction The first medical intervention for many breast cancer patients is breast conserving surgery (BCS) and/or modified radical mastectomy (MRM). Most of these patients undergo radiation therapy, following surgery. The most common side-effect of breast radiotherapy is skin damage. In the present study, the severity of acute skin changes and the underlying causes were investigated in pati...

Compare the organs at risk in breast-conserving three- dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) based on patient's breast size

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Radiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of breast cancer and essential part of the standard treatment after breast-conserving surgery, routinely done to eliminate the microscopic residual cancer. The heart and lungs are one of the most important organs at risk of breast cancer radiotherapy that th...

The Comparison 2D and 3D Treatment Planning in Breast Cancer Radiotherapy with Emphasis on Dose Homogeneity and Lung Dose

Introduction: Breast conserving radiotherapy is one of the most common procedures performed in any radiation oncology department. A tangential parallel-opposed pair is usually used for this purpose. This technique is performed using 2D or 3D treatment planning systems. The aim of this study was to compare 2D treatment planning with 3D treatment planning in tangential irradiation in breast conse...
